SEP is shortly going to be holding a small stock of fire sprinkler system jockey pumps, so that emergency breakdowns and repairs are a little less of a disaster!
Jockey pumps are a critical component within pump-fed fire sprinkler systems as they maintain a certain set pressure in the pipework. A positive pressure need to be maintained simply because the fire pumps – which force water to and through sprinkler heads in the event of an activation – are started by pressure switches, which detect a DROP in that pressure. If there is no positive pressure, then a switch cannot detect a drop in it.
A smaller jockey pump – such as our Alarm Valve Booster Pump – may also be used in mains-fed systems to prevent false alarms being activated at the alarm valve.
The pressure range within which a jockey pump is operated (cut-in and cut-out pressure) is normally controlled by a Pump Initiation Board which includes a pressure switch – almost always a Bailey & Mackey 1381V (V for Variable/adjustable differential). So a first port of call may be to check the pressure switch connections and settings first.
At SEP, we are fielding more and more enquiries for jockey pumps (especially so this month… maybe there have been a lot of freezing pipes and pumps after the cold spell?), and we now have access to preferential terms as a Lowara distributor, as well as Grundfos and Efaflu, so we are extremely well-placed to solve your problems.
Why should we be your FIRST CALL for Jockey Pumps?
- Just need ‘a pump’? Leave the search to us, as we have access to the major pump manufacturers, we can find the best price and the best lead time;
- Urgent? From February, we’ll have our own on-site stock, covering a range of pressures in both 230v and 400v;
- Local? Collect between 07:45 and 17:30; if not, we can ship up until 15:00 for next day delivery.
- Stock! Always bear in mind that, despite website claims, hardly any sellers or even manufacturers keep many (if any) complete pumps in stock.
- And let’s be honest, we’re just easier to deal with than most of the big manufacturers.
What do we need?
As jockey pumps are always low-flow, there are really only two pieces of information we need in order to suggest a replacement pump for your system:
- the available power supply (230v or 400v/3-phase), and
- the maximum pressure requirement; or
- if you are replacing an existing pump which hasn’t failed prematurely, then just tell us the make/model of the old pump, and we’ll do the rest.
