Dry Riser Testing Training

Alongside our many speciality fire sprinkler products, for some time now, we have been making and supplying 13 bar dry riser test pumps, and more recently we also offer a higher pressure 18 bar unit (for the Irish dry riser testing market, sprinkler testing, and other more demanding applications).

We have designed, made and tested the main units, and we can also supply various ancillaries such as connectors, hoses, IBC tanks etc.

But customers often ask us, do you offer training? Unfortunately, although we do have our training suite for SEP products (compressor, initiation boards, booster pumps, Zone Guardian and more), this does not currently include a dry riser capability… and there is the small point that we are not experts in the requirements of dry riser testing to BS9990:2015.

So, in order to help out our customers (or anyone else looking for guidance), we can offer details of two organisations who have installed our DRTP kit and offer the relevant training (and more).

IFEDA first set up our equipment early in 2022, and offer dry riser training courses every couple of months in Mold, North Wales; in 2025 they will also be offering training for wet risers.

More recently, the FIA (Fire Industry Association) have set up a new practical training facility in Northwich, Cheshire, for which we built a test pump unit with custom manifold. The FIA offer many courses in myriad aspects of fire training, and their dry riser courses will be available from early in 2025.

The FIA were kind enough to comment as follows, in respect of our dealings:

“From the initial enquiry, during our numerous technical queries, through to placing an order and receiving the pump, the service provided by everyone at SEP was excellent.

“Their pump can be tailored to suit your requirements ranging from simple adjustments such as castors and connections, through to different pump sizes, flow rates and pressures, and they can provide both single phase and three phase pumps if required. The pump is simple to operate. Our pump is a single-phase unit and suitable for connection to a normal socket outlet for power. Priming the pump is also a straightforward process and the pressure switch can be adjusted with a 5.5mm insulated nut driver. Our dry riser test rig is small in comparison to some systems encountered out on site, but it fills rapidly, quietly and in an environmentally friendly manner.

“The SEP DRTP is a compact, efficient, and cost-effective dry riser testing solution and we’d recommend checking it out on one of our forthcoming training courses in 2025 – watch out for further information at www.fia.uk.com.”
