Jockey Pump help from SEP

Here at SEP, we know that when your client has lost a jockey pump, they’ve probably lost their automatic fire sprinkler system protection – at the very least, a fire pump may have been initiated along with the associated time and hassle to re-set.

After years of building relationships, we work with all major pump manufacturers so, when you need a replacement, we’re ready to assist quickly.

Choosing the correct jockey pump can be overwhelming if this is just one of hundreds of components you deal with as a fire sprinkler engineer – for example, even looking at just the lowest-flow range of a Lowara (1SV) or Grundfos (CRi1), there are over 20 pressures, several flange types, 2-3 power inputs, multiple seal materials etc – for instance, searching on Grundfos’ website for a CRi1 offers you over 1,700 possible options! How do you know which you need?

Luckily you don’t need to because with our expertise and guidance, you can leave the hard work to us by simply sharing a few details and we will handle the rest from start to finish.

What we really need to know is:

  • Pressure – this is one of the most critical factors because, quite simply, it needs to be able to maintain the correct pressure for the sprinkler system; too weak, and your fire pumps will be activating; too strong and your client is overpaying.
  • Voltage – is the current pump running on 230v or is it 3-phase/400v? Bear in mind 3-phase is usually slightly cheaper, so good news if you have access to a 400v power supply.

If it’s important to you or your client, also tell us:

  • Flanges – round or oval; oval are slightly cheaper and quicker to fit…and included on the Lowara pumps.
  • Motor kw – this is not crucial, but allows us to carry out a double-check that the pressure and kw requirements match up.

If you’re not sure, then by all means just send us some photos (we work from customer photos all the time!), but bear in mind that most manufacturers will have two data plates – one on the motor (with electrical information) and one lower down on the pump (with flow and pressure, or duty information) so we’ll really need both of these, plus a photo of the whole things showing the pipework connections.

Common errors we help you avoid:

Common errors which may lead to the wrong pump being selected are: confusion over power supply; confusion over duty data plates (where a specific duty point may be mixed up with a maximum flow or pressure); ordering a different flange connection to the existing, but omitting the counter-flanges. You can never give us too much information when enquiring, but the top two items above will allow us to find something for you.

Even if your need is urgent, we have accounts with 3-4 global and national manufacturers, so one of them will almost certainly be able to deliver from stock within a few days…and sometimes we have managed to arrange a same-day delivery when critical. For example, just last week we were able to arrange for one good customer to receive seven (yes, seven!) jockey pumps as backups across several client sites, all delivered within just 48 hours.
